Broward’s Beautiful Butterfly House

September 1, 2015 By Linda Dolan

Architect Robert Broward’s contributions to Jacksonville are seen around the city. His passing earlier this year was a great loss. He was a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright and known for many signature buildings still standing in Jacksonville. His design for the Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville Art Museum, both in 1965, are phenomenal examples of his talent and personality.

Another of his great works in Jacksonville is Arlington’s Butterfly House on Wildwood Rd. This home was in the 1957 Parade of Homes and was designed as a spec house. Wayne Wood, lead author of “Jacksonville Architectural Heritage: Landmarks for the Future,” describes Broward’s approach as a lofty philosophical one designed to educate the public. He created the home as the beginning of a movement to what is now the ranch style house.

The “Butterfly” nickname for the house is so-called because of the inverted roof. Broward designed the roof to harness the Florida rains to flow into the front fountain and create a breathtaking piece of art.

The bedrooms are across the front with private gardens for each. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide natural light and a connection to nature. The existing wrought iron was not part of the original structure. Broward kept the home as open as possible and created rooms that naturally flowed into the next.

On either of the side exterior walls, concrete planters provided the perfect space to add greenery to the concrete modular units that make up the house. Most of the planters are still there but some have been broken off by vandals.

This will be a gorgeous home once it is again returned to its original glory. Read more about the fate of the Butterfly House in the Times-Union article by Tiffanie Reynolds.

7 Reasons You Need A Pool

July 31, 2015 By Linda Dolan

It’s summertime in Florida and the weather has not been kind to its residents. A dip in the pool can be a welcome relief from high temperatures in the triple digits.

Whether you want to cool off in the afternoon or soak the stress of the week away, a pool can fit your need for some water therapy.

Pool with Pavers

1. Give yourself more room for entertaining. An in-ground pool surrounded by pavers can add plenty of square feet for outdoor parties.

2. Soak up some Vitamin D. Lather up with some sunscreen and enjoy the warm rays of the sun.

3. Exercise. Get in a private session of water aerobics. The resistance of the water is more gentle on the joints than high-impact cardio.

4. Encourage quality family time. Weighted pool toys and contests for who can hold their breath the longest will be the beginning of some fun memories.

5. Create a stress-free environment. Wind down from a long day with a glass of your favorite beverage and turn on the jets and fountain for some tranquil white noise.

6. Extend your vacation. Why save swimming for a weekend getaway? Use your pool at your convenience and feel like you live in a resort.

7. Add visual interest to your yard. Creative landscaping and a talented pool installer can match the style of your home and create a beautiful addition to your yard.

With a heater and a good pool filter, you can swim year-round in your backyard pool. Need more reasons to convince the rest of the family? Contact Carol about her recent pool installation.

Preparing Your Home For Inspection

July 27, 2015 By Linda Dolan

As a seller, a home inspection is often required to fulfill an executed contract. Before closing, many lenders require a buyer secure an appraisal and a home inspection for the home they intend to purchase. Here are a few friendly tips to prepare your home for inspection:

Provide access to the attic, crawlspace, heating system, garage and other areas that will need to be inspected.

Make sure utilities and appliances are on.

Be aware that rotted wood will be probed.

Allow access to the electrical panel.

Replace burned out light bulbs.

Caulk all interior plumbing and exterior gaps or holes.

There are many more steps you can take to prepare your home for a home inspection. Contact our office for more information. You can reach Chrissy at Chrissy@DolanRealEstateGroup.com.
